Janet Stafford

Janet Stafford was born in Merced, California, on March 29, 1941, and grew up in the San Joaquin Valley of California.
She studied at Abilene Christian College. Following several incredible travel experiences, she attended Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, California, where she met and married Robert Stafford. Janet and Robert had two daughters, Stephanie and Susan. Her first teaching job was in Hamlin, Texas, where she taught 7th graders. On her door, she proudly displayed the sign, “Through these doors walk the greatest 7th graders in the world.” This auspicious beginning foreshadowed the phrase she would become known for, “It’s all about the students.” In 1984, Janet moved to Midland, Texas, and began substitute teaching at Trinity School. From this humble start, she went on to earn a Masters in Education from the University of Texas Permian Basin, became a full-time educator at Trinity, was Head of the Upper School, and a College Counselor. She taught, guided, loved, and advocated for Trinity students for over 25 years. “Big Momma,” as Janet referred to herself, had many student stories - from humorous to horrifying and everything in between. Alumni and colleagues describe Mrs. Stafford as fierce, feisty, sassy, hilarious, sharp-witted, and aware of everything going on in her classroom. Most of all, she loved her students fiercely and was loved equally in return. Trinity students kept in close contact with her throughout the years. Mrs. Stafford treasured every effort, every memory, every success, and even the failures of her students. Over her years at Trinity, Janet Stafford grew as the School grew. The development of the Upper School, drama and choral departments, and travel abroad opportunities all came with Mrs. Stafford and her unique talents. Janet Stafford strove to improve the lives of those around her. In marriage, work, and social situations, her religious beliefs compelled her to treat others with dignity, patience and, always, with humor. After retiring, she contributed to education as a donor of books and backpacks to students who did not have the means to supply them for themselves. She was also active in her church teaching ladies’ Bible classes and working with her friends in prison ministry.  Janet lived a humble, loving life that positively impacted those who had the good fortune to know, work, and learn from her.  She considered her induction into the Trinity Hall of Honor a true highlight of her unique and blessed life.
