The Middle School & Upper School Counselor acts as an advocate for student’s well-being and serves as a valuable resource for student’s educational, social, and emotional advancement. This position works with students in the Middle and Upper divisions of the school. The Middle and Upper School Counselor reports to the Head of Middle School and Head of Upper School and works closely with Division Heads, the Dean of Students, the School Nurse, the Educational Support Services Director, the College Advisor, Student Life Coordinator, and the Chaplain.
The Middle and Upper School Counselor/Wellness Director is also responsible for leading the Wellness Taskforce of the school and is expected to support the school and its leadership in pursuit of the school mission, values, and core competencies.

Responsibilities
- Demonstrate the ethical behavior necessary to maintain the highest standard of integrity, leadership, and professionalism expected of a school counselor.
- Develop, maintain, and update written protocols for counseling and critical and crisis events.
- Provide responsive services designed to meet students’ immediate needs and concerns, including short-term counseling in individual or small-group settings or crisis response.
- Retain confidential and essential documentation.
- Work with the Educational Support teachers and administrators regarding students for whom academic and social/emotional matters are related.
- Advise the administration on matters related to the legal responsibilities of schools with respect to reporting suspected abuse and education of faculty and staff regarding boundary issues with students.
- Maintain relations with and make referrals to outside professionals as appropriate.
- In collaboration with the MS Advisory team, US Student Life Director, and Physical Education Coordinator, maintain the Health and Wellness curriculum for grades 5 through 12, including delivery systems (Advisory, specific classes, etc.) and create educational programming to support a safe learning environment and preserve the integrity of all members of the school community, including students, faculty, staff, families, including topics such as nutrition, sleep, exercise, drug and alcohol abuse, and Social Emotional Learning issues.
- Audit the school wellness program annually to review and report on its impact.
- Participate in all required faculty meetings and take an active role in educating staff on counseling and wellness related topics, as well as collaborating on professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned beyond those responsibilities stated and support Trinity School and its leadership in pursuit of the school mission and values.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in a related field and counselor certification strongly preferred.
- Three-five years of experience in a Middle School or Upper School equivalent with independent school counseling experience preferred.
- Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and parents in support of the mission of Trinity School.
- Ability to be flexible and able to help in various areas when needed.

- Standing, walking, and sitting for long periods of time. Usually needed intermittently for brief and long periods of time. Frequency may vary depending on activities and location.
- Frequent bending during several hours or more while working with students. Usually performed for 5 to 30 sec at a time.
- Frequent reaching and hand dexterity for handling motor skills equipment and clerical tasks (such as handwriting, handling a clipboard, index cards, or notebooks, use of the telephone, keyboard, operating office tools and machines); manipulating small and medium size objects.
- Some squatting/kneeling may be needed for specific activities.
- Able to lift, push and pull up to 30 pounds. Frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment- May deal with stressful situations in the normal course of duties, including a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
- The work environment is a standard classroom, gymnasium, and/or outdoor setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but occasionally high depending upon student population and activities. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions and/or outdoor weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and/or bodily fluids.
